Porcelain veneers are a beautiful way to brighten a person’s smile by correcting stained, chipped or crooked teeth. They involve adding glass-like ceramic porcelain to the surface of the teeth. This material is translucent and closely resembles natural tooth enamel. When light falls upon a veneered surface, it penetrates the ceramic and reflects off the opaque dentin just beneath. This is what gives natural teeth their beautiful luster, and the same effect allows patients with porcelain veneers to have the bright, natural looking smiles they’ve always wanted.
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers, sometimes called dental veneers or dental porcelain laminates, are wafer-thin shells of porcelain that are bonded onto the front side of teeth to create a dramatic cosmetic improvement. Veneers are especially effective for correcting discolored, worn, chipped, or misaligned teeth.
How Do Veneers Work?
Porcelain veneers utilize advanced bonding materials to securely attach a thin shell of porcelain (a veneer) to a tooth. Although porcelain is inherently brittle, when it is firmly bonded to a sturdy substructure such as a tooth, it becomes very strong and durable.
Tooth enamel, the immensely hard outer coating of a tooth, is translucent. Therefore, when light strikes a tooth’s surface, it is not immediately reflected off, but instead penetrates into the enamel layer. Once light has passed through the enamel, it reflects off the opaque dentin beneath. This unique translucency effect is what gives natural, healthy teeth their attractive, lustrous appearance.
We use porcelain veneers made from state-of-the-art, translucent ceramics that closely mimic the light handling characteristics of a natural tooth’s enamel. Combined with Dr. Morgan and Dr. Rogers’ advanced cosmetic techniques and attention to detail, this enables us to create beautifully lustrous smiles that are indistinguishable from natural ones.
The Advantages of Porcelain Veneers
- Beautiful, Life-Like Appearance: Because their light reflective properties are so similar to natural teeth, our veneers are exceptionally attractive and incredibly natural in appearance.
- Stain Resistance: Due to their glass-like ceramic construction, they are highly stain resistant. Other less sophisticated dental bonding techniques can be more susceptible to staining, especially for people who consume tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco products, etc.
- Long-lasting Durability: Along with advanced bonding materials that are designed to last, Dr. Morgan and Dr. Rogers’ superb techniques and experience assure that your striking new smile will remain beautiful for many years.
